1. Why is this position available?
This is an important question to ask as the answer can be indicative of the state of the company. Did someone get promoted? Does the company need more staff because they’re so successful? Or did someone quit? Why did they quit?
2. Could you describe your ideal candidate?
You already know the required qualifications and experiences, but what kind of person is the company really looking for? Asking your hiring manager to describe the kind of person they envisioned when advertising for the role will help ascertain whether you’ll fit in with other members of staff and will also give you an insight into what the job will be like on a day-to-day basis.
3. What do you expect me to achieve in my first 6 months?
Not only does this question demonstrate how invested you are in the role but it also gives you an idea of how success is measured in the company. You will also learn the overall expectations of your new boss. You can then compare it with your own ambitions and decide whether it’s a suitable fit for you.
4. Do you have a process for employee feedback?
Without the ability to provide feedback and impact company processes you will not be able to do the best job you are able to do. The working relationship you form with the company should have the capacity to grow and evolve if there’s to be any future in it for you.
5. What has your time been like with the company?
It’s easy to spot a corporate spiel when this sort of question is asked directly. Does the hiring manager seem genuinely pleased to be there? If you can gauge their experience you’ll definitely be able to gauge the company culture and how it will impact your career.
