Assistant Head of Communications

37.5 hours per week

6-month FTC - Immediate start required

£21.67 to £25.15 per hour depending on skills and experience

A wonderful opportunity within an NHS Trust has arisen for a Senior Communications Manager to develop, and ensure delivery of, the Trust's Communications Strategy. This is a key role within a small communications team who promote the Trust's work and uphold its reputation.

The post holder will use their expertise to provide advice and guidance on all aspects of communications, particularly to senior leaders and the executive team, considering the wider Trust strategy and operations. This includes providing advice to promote and protect the reputation of the Trust, sometimes identifying communication risks. They will be key to building and protecting the reputation of the Trust, and developing agenda-based messaging.

The post holder will deputise for the Head of Communications in their absence, representing the Trust at internal and external meetings, and facilitating the smooth running of the department with designated responsibility for managing daily operational issues.

The Senior Communications Manager is accountable for the Trust's media relations, building and protecting the reputation of the Trust with the media. The Senior Communications Manager is also responsible for developing the Trust's external stakeholder communications activity, including community public relations activity. Alongside the Head of Communications, they will take a lead role in crisis management.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Taking a lead role in Internal and External communications, activity, providing advice and guidance to senior managers. Building and protecting the reputation of the Trust.
  • Co-produce in the development, and delivery, of the Trust's Communications Strategy and operational plans, ensuring specific goals are achieved.
  • Accountable for the external media relations service for the Trust, including responsibility the Trust's press office, providing strategic advice and guidance on highly complex media issues:
  • In developing with media strategies and communications, the post holder will deal with sensitive and commercial in confidence information.
  • Advising leadership in the event of an unplanned crisis.
  • Working with lawyers, regulators, political bodies, partners and communications staff from other organisations to develop crisis messages
  • Supporting the Great Place to Work Programme through the delivery of effective employee communications

Personal Specification:

  • Strong background in Internal and External Communications and PR
  • Previous experience working within the NHS beneficial
  • Educated to degree level within a relevant field
  • Exceptional stakeholder management
  • Experience of managing a team
  • Proficient in MS office

The Trust supports hybrid working with the majority of work being undertaken remotely. Occasional travel to the Southampton Headquarter and there will involve some evening and weekend work required. The role is a full-time position based on a 37.5 hour working week. Immediate start required until the end of 2022.
