Woodvale Crematorium


Responsible for the coordination of the daily funeral programme, assist in arranging Public Health funerals and arrange sales and maintenance of commemorative schemes

To assist and support the Bereavement Operations Team Leader and to deputise in their absence.

To work as part of a team to assist the Crematorium Team Leader and Senior Crematorium Officer in providing an efficient, sympathetic and dignified service to all members of the community in relation to the operation of the crematorium.


  • To support the Crematorium Team Leader and Senior Crematorium Officer by providing a high standard of customer service to the Crematorium Chapels and Crematory; ensuring the needs of the bereaved are fully met.
  • To support the Crematorium Team Leader and Senior Crematorium Officer in promoting the services and memorials at Woodvale, including assisting in carrying out tours of the facilities.
  • To maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • To assist the Crematorium Team Leader and Senior Crematorium Officer in the maintenance of cremators, ancillary equipment and the efficient operation of the crematorium in general. To ensure that the crematorium complex is maintained to a high operational standard and ensure compliance with all statutory, health & safety and best practice requirements for the cremators and ancillary equipment at Woodvale.

  • To act as chapel attendant in accordance with the staff rota, ensuring that the chapels, vestries and public areas are always prepared to accept funerals.
  • To operate the music and visual media systems as required.
  • To act as parking attendant as required.
  • To undertake maintenance of the buildings, grounds and memorials in the vicinity of Woodvale Crematorium, including some gardening work; cleaning duties and maintenance/cleaning of memorials.
  • To release cremated remains of the deceased according to the correct procedures, ensuring remains are signed for and recorded in the appropriate manner.
  • To attend at the strewing/interment of cremated remains and to record the location of their final disposal, ensuring that the correct paperwork is completed.
  • To secure the crematorium buildings, ensuring correct closing down procedures are correctly followed, including the alarm system and CCTV recording equipment.
  • To attend training, and assist in training other staff, as required.

Essential Criteria

  • Educated to NQF level 2 or equivalent experience
  • ICCM or FBCA certificate of proficiency in cremation. If not currently held, the successful candidate will be required to complete this training during the first six months of employment
  • To be prepared to undertake specialist cremator training.
  • Working knowledge of Health & Safety requirements is desirable, especially in regard to manual handling
  • Experience of providing excellent customer service both face-to-face and on the telephone, both to the public and to other professionals
  • Experience of using tact and sensitivity in a customer service environment
  • Ability to deal with services sympathetically and sensitively without becoming emotionally affected
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work, and to respond quickly and efficiently to unplanned situations, work under pressure and remain calm
  • Flexible approach and ability to use own initiative
  • Ability to keep accurate computerised and manual records
  • Suitable level of fitness to carry out the physical aspects of the job, including moving coffins, scheduled maintenance of cremators and ancillary equipment, cleaning. Must be able to work outdoors.
  • Commitment to acquiring awareness and knowledge of Health and Safety policy and practice as it applies to the job holders area of work
  • Ability to co-operate and adhere to Health and Safety Policy, practices and instructions
  • To be able to demonstrate a commitment to the principles of Equalities and to be able to carry out duties in accordance with the Council's Equalities Policy.
