Our client based at Heathrow is offering an exciting opportunity within their team as a Finance Manager, Indirect Tax. You will need to show experience and skills stated below in order to be successful within the role and take on this fantastic position. You will also need to be happy with some travel to meetings with HMRC and Government advisors to their office in Glasgow.

Job overview

Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, Tax, the purpose of the role is to lead on driving financial excellence, ensuring that the business has sustainable foundations to secure our future.

The role holder is accountable for ensuring that the group complies with all indirect tax legislation/taxes on consumption - VAT, Excise Duties, Customs Duty, Carbon Taxation, Landfill, Aggregates, IPT etc. and accounts for tax appropriately, taking responsibility for meeting external tax compliance and reporting obligations and developing an excellent relationship with the UK tax authorities whilst ensuring that our clients direct costs are minimised. Lobbying the UK tax authorities/HM Treasury and Government in relation to complex tax technical issues to influence/change tax legislation.

The role holder is also required to demonstrate strong leadership in building a culture of tax awareness across the business to drive continuous improvement

You should have a strong ability in simplifying and communicating effectively at a senior level complex tax messages, challenging constructively, displaying a broad knowledge of tax and financial concepts.

Principle accountabilities

  • Support the Head of Finance, Tax, along with the other members of the Financial Control Leadership team to deliver the Finance team purpose of enabling our client to deliver its value potential
  • Support the Head of Finance, Tax, lead, coach and develop a team of tax professionals which provides strong communication across the wider team and provide a consistent focus on team development.
  • Manage relationships with tax authorities including attendance at technical tax meetings (including the CBI and The Infrastructure Forum); lobbying on specific issues where appropriate to help continue with the Group's low risk rating.
  • Responsible for raising tax awareness in the business by engagement with other areas of expertise and build relationships with key staff.
  • Lead in driving change in the way we liaise with procurement to ensure indirect tax issues are considered on transactions and use knowledge of the business to identify potential tax risk areas and be proactive in providing alternatives and solutions to minimise these risks.
  • Monitor best practice and changes in indirect tax legislation and take ownership to ensure that opportunities and risks are assessed, changes implemented and lobby to protect the Group's interests where applicable.
  • Responsible for setting clear direction on the approach our client takes to its Indirect Tax affairs, ensuring this is understood and adhered to by leaders in the business.
  • Agreeing and setting policy on the responsibilities our client must take in its approach to mitigating risk, ensuring there is appropriate governance, controls and review undertaken to adhere to requirements under the Corporate Criminal Offence and Senior Accounting Officer regimes.
  • Fostering positive and constructive discussions with the Group's HMRC Customer Compliance Manager (CCM) and working with HMRC and HMT Directorates as a partner on government policy matters such as VAT Refund Export Scheme, EU Exit/new UK Sovereign Nation contingency planning.
  • Lobby on indirect tax issues the business encounters to reduce tax risks and uncertainty through HM Government relationships and leadership within external forums, e.g. CBI, CIOT.
  • Ensure the ultimate integrity of the figures reported on indirect tax returns and their successful submission to HMRC
  • Manage the indirect tax compliance activities of specialists in the Tax and BSC teams.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA or CTA qualified) with a minimum of 5 years of leadership experience operating at a technical and strategic level with extensive experience of indirect taxes.
  • Likely to be "Big 4" background or experience within HMRC Policy.
  • Driven with significant energy. Strong influencer with the ability to structure and deliver persuasive arguments at Director, Executive Director and Board levels.
  • Reflective with the demonstrable ability to learn from and adapt to environment to deliver results.
  • Strong leadership skills with a demonstrable track record of leading high-performance teams toward the successful attainment of challenging goals
