Joel Fletcher is an office recruiter in Nottingham

Joel Fletcher

Director

Q: How did you get to your current position?
A: I started in recruitment 10 years ago after attending University in the UK and Australia studying Public Relations and I’ve never looked back!! Its been the best 10 years and I’ve honestly loved every minute. I wanted career that was fast paced, working with a range of people where I could develop relationships that offered you huge rewards. No day is has ever been the same! Within my first 3 years I was Consultant of the Year and then moved into management roles. I started with Tate by setting up new operations in Nottingham and Leicester. I’m now Director for the Midlands and North.

Q: What qualities do you look for in your team and why?
A: I always look for people who can work as part of a team for the good of our candidates and clients. We are helping companies grow and developing peoples careers so it’s also very  important for people to care about what we do. I look for people who can demonstrate true passion and tenacity. If you have the right attributes and principles I can help develop the right skills and knowledge.

Q: What has been the biggest challenge in your career to date and why?
A: I started my recruitment career in 2008 just as the recession hit so I know what it’s like to really have to work in an extremely challenging market, but I don’t think I’ve ever lost my drive to be the best and always be at the top of my game. When I started at Tate I set up two new operations in Nottingham and Leicester from scratch which was a lot of hard work, they are now two top performing offices.

Q: What advice would you give to a younger 'you' starting out in your career?
A: Do exactly what you did, push yourself every day to achieve something new and never put off tomorrow what you can do today.

Q: What motivates you and why? What gets you up in the morning?
A: Seeing my wonderful teams progressing and achieving so much and knowing that I am on hand to support their roles and career development. Knowing that we change people’s lives every week whether we are placing graduates into their first job or it’s a HR / Marketing professional we supporting develop their next steps in their careers. I am always the first one in the office but I like to try swim before in come in.

Q: What is your most memorable career moment?
A: Starting at Tate with a brand new operation in a new location and setting everything up from scratch including the team and office was so very rewarding when we started to see to the success, so when I got a call to say we’d placed our first candidate it was incredible. Also winning team of the year after just two full years of trading was an incredible achievement, I was so proud of my team and we all cried with happiness!

Q: What are your interests and hobbies outside of work?
A: I love to travel. Each month you’ll find me in Europe exploring a new location and trying different foods. When I take longer holidays I love long haul trips. My favourite was a trip I took to Hong Kong and then travelling across Vietnam.

Q: What is your favourite film?
A: The Goonies!!

Q: Best book you've read?
A: I’ve always got a book on the go, but top two favourites have to be ‘A Million Little Pieces’ by James Frey or from my favourite childhood author, Roald Dhal – ‘Danny, the Champion of the World!’
